West Coast Best Coast

Twickenham Boars are pleased to announce our 1st Home Brew Competition.

Style Guidelines & Eligibility

To keep things simple there are only 2 Categories

American Pale Ale – 18B
American IPA – 21A

Entries will be assessed against the BJCP Style Guidelines 2021 available via this link (PDF).

However, the emphasis is on West Coast styles and the judges will be scoring in favour of beers that have a signature “west coast” expression – so please take note when selecting your hops.

There is currently a limit of 25 places for each style.
Each entrant may enter a maximum of 1 beer in each category. Any one found to have made multiple entries may be disqualified. Entry fees are not refundable.

Bottles will not be returned to entrants.

Each entry will consist of 3 x 330 to 500 ml cans or amber / brown glass capped, corked, swing top bottles, or brown 500ml PET ‘coopers’ screw cap bottles that are void of all identifying information, including labels and embossing. Printed caps are allowed, but must be blacked out completely.

What defines a West Coast style compared with other IPA or APA styles?

There isn’t an exact BJCP definition but will be looking for clear, bitter and hoppy. Flavour and aroma wise we typically expect one or more of pine, resin, citrus and tropical fruit.

All entrants will receive feedback sheets after the competition has taken place.

Eligibility

This competition is open to any UK based homebrewer (overseas entries are not eligible). Competition organisers, staff, judges and stewards may enter the competition.

Measures are in place to ensure fair, anonymous, judging. Judges and stewards will not be assigned to categories that they have entered. Entries must have been made at home. Those made in commercial establishments, including brew-on-premise establishments, are not eligible.
